The San Francisco 49ers had a clear plan this offseason that didn’t involve shelling out big money to bring in star players. It turns out that was the hurdle between the 49ers and superstar wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams told the Athletic’s Mike Silver that San Francisco was one of the first teams that reached out to his agent. Talks didn’t get far because of the 49ers’ self-imposed financial constraints.

“I was entertaining the Niners,” Adams said via the Athletic, “but they were like, ‘We’re paying wholesale. We ain’t paying retail.’ I didn’t talk to them, but that’s what my agent told me — like five times, that quote. And I was like, ‘OK, well, I’m not a wholesale-type dude.’”

Adams landed a two-year, $44 million contract with the 49ers’ division rival the Los Angeles Rams.

Given San Francisco’s slow free agency it’s not a surprise they were unwilling to play in the $22 million per year pool, even with a star like Adams. This offseason they limited themselves to lower-tier signings and instead of Adams acquired former Ram Demarcus Robinson on a two-year deal worth up to $8 million.

The 49ers will face Adams and the Rams twice this season in NFC West showdowns.
