The Brooklyn Nets are still in the early stages of their offseason that could change the trajectory of their franchise depending on what happens this summer. However, while Brooklyn is gearing up for the summer and next season, one of their former players is doing his thing in his playoffs as he helped his team win a playoff game in the first round.
Dennis Schroder, who the Nets traded to the Golden State Warriors in December, eventually found his way to the Detroit Pistons as one of the veterans to lead a young team to the playoffs. Detroit entered the Eastern Conference playoffs as the sixth seed, meaning that they have a matchup against a formidable New York Knicks team led by Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson.
The Pistons’ best player is Cade Cunningham, who had an impressive showing of his own with 33 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists to lead Detroit to its biggest win in quite some time as they snapped an NBA-record 15-game losing streak in the postseason. Schroder wasn’t just a bystander in the 100-94 Detroit victory on Monday as he put up 20 points and three assists in 29 minutes off the bench.
Not only did Schroder produce in his bench role, he also filled the role of the closer for the Pistons as he hit a clutch three-pointer with less than a minute left in the game that put Detroit ahead 97-94. Knicks guard Mikal Bridges, also formerly of the Nets, tried to tie the game with a three-pointer of his own after Schroder’s clutch bucket, but the shot was off and the rest of the game was done from there.
Schroder, 31, began this season with Brooklyn and he went on to play 23 games for the franchise, averaging 18.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in what was one of the seasons of his career. Schroder did not have the kind of role with the Warriors and Pistons that he had with the Nets, but he’s showing that he can make do with whatever role he is given, especially in the postseason.
