Apr. 21—QUINCY — The Jacks (8-4-1) put together a hard-fought win over the Huskies (7-5-1) showing their grit and squeezing out a 3-2 victory. Head coach Hector Vaca was amazed by his team’s performance.
“These guys just never stopped fighting. They played with heart, and they actually looked like they wanted to win,” he said.
Early in the game, the Jacks gave up a score to the Huskies, putting them behind the eight ball. Though team chemistry remained strong, and the Jacks were able to tie it up before the end of the first half, 1-1.
That ended up being the confidence boost they needed as they were able to take the lead at 2-1 pretty quickly in the second half.
Even once the Huskies were able to tie the game at two apiece, Vaca did not see his team look shaken.
The Jacks’ determination led them to a third score and to defend home turf for their fifth straight win. The grit and heart that Vaca’s team shares are embedded in the culture.
“I think it’s something that’s just in Quincy; they’re fighters, and we’re just a fighting community, and that’s just who we are. That’s what I think the community represents, and that’s what’s embedded in these guys,” Vaca said.
Vaca spoke highly of Erick Zepeta, who was able to score and tally an assist against the Huskies. The performance boosted his resume for the year as he now stands at nine goals and six assists.
The Jacks are coming up on the final stretch of their season and still have to face top teams like Selah and East Valley. Victory in each game would be substantial for their season and elevate them from where they currently stand at eight wins
“I think we’re in a good spot. It’ll be tough games, but I don’t think it’s anything that these guys haven’t seen before,” Vaca said.
The Jacks are looking forward to facing King’s Knights on Saturday, April 19.
