Victor Lindelöf rushed to hospital from Manchester United’s dramatic Europa League triumph over Lyon at half-time after his son “split his entire head open”.

The Swedish centre-back was forced to leave Old Trafford after being told his youngest son, Francis, was badly wounded falling into a glass staircase at home. Lindelof, who had been on the bench in midweek, returned to duties on Sunday, captaining United in their 1-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, on social media, his wife Maja explained how it had been a traumatic week for the family, with Francis undergoing plastic surgery to repair his wounds.

“An hour before the [Lyon] game started, our babysitter called and said they were in an ambulance on the way to hospital,” she wrote.

“My youngest son Francis had split his entire head open. He had been chasing his big brother Ted Louie at home, and fallen into our glass staircase.”

Detailing what happened, Maja said their youngest child will be left with permanent scarring on his forehead. “His forehead was in two parts,” she added. “He was in hospital both Thursday and Friday. He had to have plastic surgery to put his forehead back together. He was put under anaesthetic. It is the first time I have experienced something like this happening with one of my children. It was incredibly unpleasant, and not something I want to experience again.”

The operation “went well”, and “Francis is back on track”, Maja added. “He is a Viking, and back to normal. Everyone was so worried, but he continues his life as if nothing has happened. The doctors say he will have a big scar on his forehead. But never mind – I’m just happy that it went so well.”

The Lindelöfs, who have been married since May 2018, are expecting a third child together later this year. Lindelöf’s contract is set to expire at the end of June after what has been a difficult season for the entire squad at United, who will record the club’s worst-ever finish in a Premier League season. Lindelöf, 30, has recorded 277 appearances since joining in the summer of 2017 from Benfica.
