With Canada’s second goal of the semi-finals, Marie-Philip Poulin moved into a class of her own at the IIHF World Championships.

Her 87th career point at the Worlds, a goal scored at 14:44 of the first period, moved Poulin into lone possession of Canada’s all-time scoring lead at the World Championships.

It was Poulin’s tournament leading 10th point.

With the goal, she passed Hayley Wickenheiser who had 86 career points. Not only is Poulin now in first all-time among Canadians, she now trails only Hilary Knight all-time at the tournament.

Poulin has appeared in 13 World Championships, making her debut with Canada in 2009 when she scored five points in five games. That year’s Canadian roster included Hockey Hall of Fame members Jayna Hefford, Hayley Wickenheiser, Kim St. Pierre, and Caroline Ouellette.

Poulin became Canada’s captain in 2015 and has remained in the role since.

Assisting on Poulin’s goal was Montreal Victoire linemate Jennifer Gardiner. Gardiner’s assist, her ninth point of the tournament, gave her the most all-time by a Canadian in their World Championship debut.

Earlier in the tournament, Finland’s captain Michelle Karvinen, who scored the first goal of the game against Canada, became Finland’s new all-time leading scorer.
