No. 3 Tennessee (33-5, 12-4 SEC) defeated Kentucky (20-15, 6-10 SEC), 8-2, Friday to open a three-game series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
Junior left-handed pitcher Liam Doyle (7-1) started for the Vols and earned his seventh win of the season. He pitched seven innings and recorded nine strikeouts. Doyle totaled 101 pitches, including 74 strikes, against 28 batters. He also allowed four hits, two earned runs and one walk.
Kentucky hit into five ground outs and seven fly outs.
Doyle discussed his pitching performance after the game.
“One of those teams, and one of those games, and just one of those days, where you got to make big game changes to what your game plan was originally, which is fine,” Doyle said. “With Frank (Anderson) helping me out and ease around the plate, you’re able to make those adjustments pretty easy, and just get a job done and give my team a chance to win.”
