The Buffalo Bills and cornerback Christian Benford agreed to a contract extension earlier this offseason. Details of the deal are now available.
Benford, 24, has proven to be a diamond in the rough for the Bills.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft, Benford’s rise has landed him a four-year, $76 million extension.
Over the course of Benford’s deal, various bonuses and other items will be factored in. What usually matters most to fans are the salary cap implications.
Because of the cap, Benford’s contract likely will change in the coming years.
Benford has a void year added on to the end of it which helps the team spread the salary cap hit out over an extra year.
However, Benford’s salary cap hit quickly jumps in his new contract.
In 2025, it sits at $2.6M and the following year at $7.456M. The dead-cap hits, the charge to Buffalo’s salary cap if Benford was moved off the roster, are at $18.89M and $16.25M over the next two years, respectively. Essentially, it would cost the Bills most to release Benford than to keep him during that time.
In 2027, that flips according to Spotrac.
Benford’s cap hit is at $19.4M and his dead-cap hit is at $4.5M. The Bills would then save near $15M in cap space by cutting Benford at that time… but assuming he continues to play at a high level, the team will rework his contract to make cap space will still paying Benford.
Bills Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.
