In light of the news that broke this week regarding the status of quarterback Derek Carr’s shoulder injury, there’s been recent speculation about the Carolina Panthers draft plans ahead of next week. After a post made by the team this weekend on Sheduer Sanders stating his case as the draft’s top quarterback. An interesting post to say the least on a player that the Panthers will almost certainly not be selecting in round one. With that said though, this move more so seemed like a ploy to potentially get a team to move up ahead of the Saints to select Sheduer Sanders with the no. 8 selection.

This speculation continued when Panthers general manager Dan Morgan answered a question asked by the media about how the Carr injury could affect the team’s draft plans stating that they’ll be, “waiting if somebody wants to come up.” A team that has made an emphasis on defense, may feel like they can still get a premium player by moving back, being that the top of the draft is very offense-heavy.

Aside from teams potentially moving up for a quarterback, there are some other players that teams just outside the top-10 might be interested in. Our own Darrion Gray mentioned the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys as teams that may be looking to move ahead of the Saints to select blue-chip prospects such as running back Ashton Jeanty or wide receiver Tetiaroa McMillan: “The Cowboys have a clear need at running back and wide receiver. It’s very likely they’ll grab one of them in the first round. Moving in front of the Saints would most likely be a move for Jeanty. They could reasonably wait for McMillan or Matthew Golden at No. 12 if both are on the board at No. 9.”

It is also worth researching what might a trade up to pick No. 8 cost if you’re one of these teams. Using the Jimmy Johnson trade value chart, a move up from pick’s No. 10 (Chicago) and No. 12 (Dallas) would likely cost a third-round selection. If let’s say you’re the Pittsburgh Steelers looking to move up from pick No. 21 for a quarterback, you’re now looking at an additional first round selection and then some.

A move like this prior to the draft won’t happen, but the Panthers have quietly made it known that they’re open for business at the No. 8 spot. We’ll just have to find out on draft night if something does end up materializing.
