MINERSVILLE — Minersville utility player Sara McGrath is making a name for herself in Schuylkill County on the softball field early in her career.

As just a freshman, McGrath has been on a heater to start the year. McGrath has a .536 batting average and .658 on base percentage to go along with 15 hits and 11 RBIs through 11 games.

“I have just been confident in myself,” said McGrath. “Of course my teammates and coaches always believe in me. I put in the work on my own time and that also helps.”

The Battlin’ Miners head coach Katelyn Rittenbaugh loves what she is seeing from her freshman sensation.

“She has really stepped up for us,” said Rittenbaugh. “She has put a lot of hard work in and she is always staying in after practice and working on her own.”

McGrath has prepared herself for this moment. The freshman played travel ball for Stripes and Strikes 18U team as only a freshman. Competing with older players has helped her a lot this season.

“It has got me used to the speed of the pitchers,” said McGrath. “Playing up with 18U I have got to see more dominant pitchers and seeing that has been very helpful.”

Minersville is a young team with only four seniors so having a freshman with this success is promising for Rittenbaugh and her squad.

“I am really excited and I think we can make a lot of adjustments to her game,” said Rittenbaugh. “Even though she is doing really well, there is still work to be done. I am really excited for her and the future to come. “

McGrath makes sure to get extra reps in to protect her craft.

“I go home, hit off the tee and I go to hitting lessons,” said McGrath. “I just make sure I get better every day when we are not practicing.”

As the season goes on McGrath has personal and team goals: She wants to perform to the best of her abilities, and for the team to just get one percent better every day with a high attitude.

McGrath enjoys repping Minersville and hopes to keep the legacy going. Minersville holds 10 PIAA state championships with the last one coming in 2017.

“It’s an honor we have a lot of state championships,” said McGrath. “Being able to lead that legacy and do it again.”

Despite their history of success, the young team in transition sits at 4-7 this season so far as it works to get back to championship form. The Battlin’ Miners have wins against Nativity, Weatherly, Shenandoah Valley and Marian.

You can catch McGrath and Minersville in action Saturday when they take on Brandywine Heights at 10 a.m. and Blue Mountain at 2 p.m. in Blue Mountain’s annual softball tournament at Blue Mountain High School.
