The Carolina Hurricanes concluded the regular season with a 7-5 loss to the Ottawa Senators.
The Canes overcame a 3-0 deficit, scoring five straight goals before then surrendering four straight in the loss.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour along with Andrei Svechnikov spoke with the media. Here’s what they had to say:
Rod Brind’Amour
On the game: I saw two handfuls of penalties tonight. It just kills the game. You could say they’re penalties, but really? So many tick-tack ones and then the game’s just not even a game. Too bad. We have to kill them when we get them, but not when you have eight, nine. Four in the third. It’s not even a game then. That was tough. I’d like to have obviously ended on a different note than that, because that was just tough to be a part of, but it is what it is and we’re moving on.
On Frederik Andersen: We left him out there to dry a bit. They made nice plays. That’s their team and they’ve got skill. You give them power plays, you have no chance. Too many and we left him out to hang out there on a lot of those penalties. Other than that, he made some good saves.
On witnessing his son’s first NHL goal: Right now, it hasn’t really sunk in too much because it was a loss and he did turn it over on the one and it cost us a goal. But it’s been a long journey for him and I’m happy that he can at least say that he tucked one in.
On getting some guys on the scoreboard that had been in various scoring droughts: It was a tough game to play in. We know that. We’ve just been waiting to get to the next level, but we still have to play these games. That’s what’s is frustrating because we have to play them, so let’s play them and not do it like that. That was just a waste of time to be quite honest. But I’m glad to see [Svechnikov] got on the board and hopefully that can carry some momentum starting next week when we start up.
On if there’s any worries about the stretch of losses heading into the playoffs: What team is it? It’s not our team. I’m just watching for effort. I’m just watching guys to make sure we’re trying to do things the right way that are in the lineup and that are going to be playing when we start up. That’s what you’re doing. And trying not to get hurt basically. That’s what we were trying to accomplish here.
Andrei Svechnikov
On the game: Tough couple of penalties. Tough couple of calls, but overall I thought we played great, especially on a back-to-back. It’s always hard to play back-to-back, but we played good and it’s the last game of the season. Not too worried about it. Just move our game to the playoffs.
On the effort level: I feel like it’s always going to be huge, especially when you’re missing those guys. You’re always going to have effort. It doesn’t matter who is or isn’t in the lineup. We’re always going to have effort and continue to do what we do.
On seeing Skyler Brind’Amour score his first career NHL goal: You just telling me and I got goosebumps. It’s very special. I remember when I scored my first goal and you just never forget that moment. So he’s always going to keep that and always remember that.
On his feelings heading into the playoffs: We feel good, feel confident just need to stay healthy and play our game. Just do what we do.
On the relief of finally finishing out the regular season: The last three to five games, it’s kind of been hard. You come and pretty much play for nothing, but you’re still trying to focus. That’s the hard part. Getting yourself going. It’s always nice to get them out of the way and now focus on the playoffs.
