The New Orleans Saints began voluntary team workouts on Monday, April 14, and there’s no player in focus as much as Spencer Rattler. The second-year quarterback is right underneath the microscope in light of Derek Carr’s season-threatening injury.
New Orleans started workouts earlier than most teams because they hired a new coach this offseason. This phase of offseason activities is features meetings and strength and conditioning. The meetings will be critical for Kellen Moore and Brandon Staley as they begin to implement their philosophies on each side of the ball.
When in those meetings, there’s no one with a bigger light on them than Rattler. Derek Carr’s availability in 2025 is still up in the air, but he won’t be present during these activities.
There aren’t any real field drills being run at this point in the offseason, so you won’t hear much about how Rattler is connecting with his teammates or picking up Moore’s playbook. You can hear about different intangibles, however. Leadership in the weight room or operating like a true starter in meetings, and becoming a rallying point for those around him.
The truth is the Saints have a game plan at quarterback, and there is nothing the second-year player can do to deter them from drafting another young quarterback in the NFL draft. Still, Rattler will be watched even closer than other players.
