One of the major imperatives for the New York Giants heading into this offseason was to find solutions, both short- and long-term ones, at the quarterback position.

General manager Joe Schoen said at his pre-draft press conference that after signing veterans Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito, selecting a quarterback in this draft was no longer mandatory.

“With the signing of those two players, I think we put ourselves in a position where I don’t think it’s mandatory or something with our feet to the fire, that we have to do,” Schoen said.

Although his job is on the line, Schoen feels comfortable with the quarterback room he’s assembled.

“I think the two guys we signed have played a lot of ball. They’ve got a lot of skins on the wall. I do think we’ve upgraded that room compared to where it was a year ago. I like the two guys that we have, and Tommy’s (DeVito) still in there, and he’s won games for us, too, and he’s still developing,” he said. “We’re happy with the makeup of the room right now.”

“If there’s not one or you don’t perceive there to be one or it’s not available when you pick, that’s out of your control,” Schoen added of selecting a potential franchise quarterback in the draft. “Yeah, we would love to have one. If there’s one available, we’ll definitely take one.”

Schoen mentioned that this quarterback class was deep and acknowledged that they have done (and are still doing) extensive work on many of the top candidates. It was reported this week that the Giants were meeting again with Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Tyler Shough of Louisville, and also with Syracuse’s Kyle McCord.

“You’d like to have a young franchise quarterback. I think every general manager would be. Everybody wants that,” said Schoen. “But the value has to be right or it doesn’t matter. You get that one wrong — you’ve just got to get that right. When you’re in a position to get the right one at the right time, that’s when you pull the trigger.”

He could be sandbagging the public with such a comment, but who knows? Whichever quarterback Schoen does select will not play in 2025 barring something unforeseen. The Giants have a potential $25 million invested in Wilson and Winston and will want to give them the lion’s share of the reps.
