The Dallas Mavericks are a raging tire fire these days after inexplicably trading away franchise superstar Luka Dončić in February, and a Tuesday closed-door press conference apparently did nothing to mitigate the damage.
ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon called the closed-door press session “an epic failure” in trying to assuage fan outrage over the generationally shocking (and ridiculously stupid) Dončić trade. The full press conference transcript has gone viral for how cringey and unconvincing it reads.
Making it all that much worse, a new report suggests Dallas general manager Nico Harrison didn’t even want to do this bizarre media roundtable in the first place.
ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania shared on Wednesday evening that the press conference was Mavs owner Patrick Dumont’s idea, which strongly hints Harrison really didn’t have a say in participating.
“Nico Harrison did not want to do this closed-door roundtable,” Charania told his fellow ESPN broadcasters. “This was not his idea. This was something that was enforced by their owner, Patrick Dumont.”

Well, that’s not good. The Mavericks are going to take this colossally confusing trade on the chin for years, and bewildering moves like this are making it worse.
At least Harrison can apparently say this terrible decision wasn’t his idea this time around?
