Ramone Green Jr. played his first two seasons at Missouri State football as a walk-on. He will be on scholarship for his third.

Green was surprised by the news on Wednesday when Bears coach Ryan Beard addressed his team in the locker room. The football team shared the video on its social media accounts, showing Green wiping away tears as he embraced his family.

Beard started the video by telling his team that someday in the future, they may not feel like going to work, but they have to in order to feed their families. He asked those on his team to raise their hands if they were already fathers. Green’s hand went up.

“Some days you don’t feel like it or don’t have it, but what are you going to do?” Beard said. “You get up and go do your work because that’s what men do.”

Beard then addressed Green directly: “You’ve been doing that here for free. You’re on full scholarship.”

The team around Green applauded as the running back stood up to give Beard a hug. Beard then pointed Green to the back of the room where his family, including his daughter, waited.

Green walked to the back of the room, hugged his family, and picked up his daughter to another round of applause from the team.

Green has appeared in 13 games through two seasons at MSU and has carried the ball 10 times for 29 yards. Heading into his third year, he could be in the mix for more touches in an overhauled backfield featuring Shomari Lawrence and King Davis.

The former Nixa star is one of the best tailbacks to come through the Springfield area in recent years. He was named the News-Leader’s 2022 Player of the Year after rushing for over 2,220 yards and 35 touchdowns.
