Apr. 16—1. Kennebunk

The Rams had a 58-game winning streak snapped by Falmouth last May 17, then came up short in a bid for a fourth straight Class A title, losing to eventual champ Yarmouth, 8-7, in the semifinals. Kennebunk returns nine players with significant varsity experience. Junior attack Camdyn Keenan had 34 goals and 39 assists as a sophomore. Other members of a strong junior class include midfielder Helen Kennie, a strong defender, skilled player and a possession-gaining draw specialist, and defender Madeline Dowling. With Yarmouth having lost eight starters to graduation and Falmouth breaking in a new coach, Kennebunk gets the nod as southern Maine’s — and the state’s — top team this preseason.

2. Freeport

The Falcons were 16-2 and the Class B runner-up in 2024, losing in the final to Greely, 8-7. Freeport moved up to Class B after winning the Class C title in 2023. The Falcons return their leading scorers from the past two seasons in senior midfielders Mia Levesque (44 goals, 24 assists) and Lana DiRusso (63 goals, 23 assists), and its defensive core, including senior starting goalie Hailey Curtis, and all-Western Maine Conference senior defender Julia Whalen. Junior midfielder Reed Proscia (16 goals) and senior attack Emma White (13 goals, 15 assists) are two other key veterans. Team defense is a focus for 11th-year coach Marcia Wood in the preseason.

3. Greely

Last season, the Rangers (13-4) won their third straight Class B title in their fourth straight championship game appearance. Coach Becca Koelker’s team had heavy graduation losses — most of the defense and two-thirds of the scoring. Combined with a difficult schedule (six games against top Class A teams), that may mean a few more losses than usual, but the Rangers have younger players ready to step up and two experienced finishers in senior attackers Jane Flynn (26 goals, 14 assists) and Kylie Lord (18 goals, 12 assists). Junior midfielders Audrey Ingersoll, Avery Bush and Kelsey Crocker each recovered 25 ground balls last season and showed they can cause turnovers. Now they’ll have the opportunity to be more involved with the offense after combining for 15 varsity goals.

4. Yarmouth

Yarmouth beat Falmouth 12-8 in last year’s Class A championship game. Expect the Clippers to improve throughout the season as they fill eight open starting spots. Despite the graduation losses, getting to a state final for the 12th straight season is very possible. Coach Dorothy Holt, in her 23rd season with the Clippers, still has several varsity veterans, led by senior defender and returning starter Paige Brewer, senior midfielder Sierra Hunt, who rotated between attack and midfield a year ago, and junior middies Celia Zinman (returning starter) and Keira Cowans.

5. Falmouth

Maddie York takes over as head coach for Ashley Pullen. Senior defender Sadie Kramer and senior middie Audrey Farnham are strong overall players, and the defense as a group is sound with senior Brianna Ter Horst and returning goalie tandem Amelia Brann and Tessa Woodbury. Expect Maisy Clement (91 career points) and Farnham to be among the top scorers.
