A Tennessee product from the Tony Vitello era is returning to MLB.
Former Vols’ third baseman Trey Lipscomb was recalled by the Nationals on Wednesday. He was recalled after starting third baseman Paul DeJong sustained a pitch to his face April 15 and was placed on the 10-day injured list.
Lipscomb was selected by Washington in the third-round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft (No. 84 overall). He played at Tennessee from 2019-22 and won the 2022 SEC Tournament and regular-season championship.
Lipscomb appeared in 66 games in his final season at Tennessee in 2022. He totaled 22 home runs, 84 RBIs, 68 runs, 89 hits, 19 doubles, three triples, 26 walks and four stolen bases.
The former Vol made his MLB debut with the Nationals in 2024, replacing former Vol Nick Senzel.
Lipscomb joins Garrett Crochet (Boston), Chase Dollander (Colorado) and Seth Halvorsen (Colorado) on current MLB rosters.
Ben Joyce (Angels) was placed on the 15-day injured list April 12 due to shoulder inflammation. Jordan Beck (Colorado) was also optioned to Triple-A after nine games with the Rockies in 2025.
