IndyStar’s Gregg Doyel was named the top columnist in the nation in the second-largest classification of the 2024 APSE contest. It’s the fifth time Doyel has earned the classification’s top honor in his 11 years in Indianapolis, also winning in 2014, ’17, ’19 and ’22.
It was one of 11 top 10 honors IndyStar received. Nate Atkins finished third in breaking news and long feature, sixth in beat writing and ninth in explanatory. Dana Hunsinger Benbow was second in long feature and fifth in explanatory; and Grace Smith was third in feature photo. IndyStar also finished seventh in its project around Indianapolis hosting the NBA All-Star game thanks to the work of Dustin Dopirak, Doyel, Atkins and Hunsinger Benbow and eighth in event coverage for the Indianapolis 500 for stories from Nathan Brown, Doyel, Atkins and Hunsinger Benbow.
IndyStar also earned APSE’s triple crown for finishing in the top 10 in event coverage, project and print portfolio. Only the Washington Post has won more APSE awards than IndyStar’s 88 since 2016.
Gregg Doyel’s award-winning contest entry:
Zach Edey: Taunting Zach Edey is weird. Especially after he just did *that* to your beloved Hoosiers.
Tim Saylor: A 90-point game put him on Sports Illustrated cover. A horrific crime put him in prison.
Indiana State: Indiana State continues bittersweet march from NCAA Tourney snub to NIT championship game
High School transfers: Mt. Vernon, Cathedral say transfers aren’t for sports, so why can’t the kids play?
