Apr. 15—JAMESTOWN — Jamestown High School head baseball coach, Tim Ranum, had an inspiring conversation with senior pitcher Derek Hatlewick in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday.

“He came out and said, ‘you’re fine, you’ve got it. You feel good?'” Hatlewick said. “I was like, ‘yep’ and he was like ‘all right, go get ’em.'”

The end of the conversation signaled the end of the road for St. Mary’s.

Hatlewick and the Blue Jays delivered a 5-3, 6-5 sweep against Bismarck St. Mary’s . The pair of wins improves Jamestown’s record to 3-3 in conference and 4-4 overall. Jamestown will finish out the week on Thursday with a road tilt at Bismarck High. First pitch is scheduled to be delivered at 4:30 p.m.

“It’s time that we go on a winning streak,” Ranum said. “We played really well in game two on Saturday … and game one was pretty solid effort. We left some runs out there but that is just how it goes. We are still kind of figuring out who we are but that is how it is in early season baseball.”

Jamestown started things at the plate in the first, taking a 1-0 lead but St. Mary’s responded in the top of the third and produced a two-run inning.

Down 2-1, Jamestown rattled off three runs to take back the lead.

“We were kind of quiet there and then Braxton (Perkins) almost hit one out of the park,” Ranum said. “We were kind of dead in the water for two innings in a row there then all of the sudden we got a little life. The next couple of guys worked some walks and got bases loaded.

“The bottom of the order really did their job all day,” he said. “They created a lot of traffic. I just want the guys to never give up on an inning. Any inning can be a good inning.”

In an attempt to come within one of the game leaders, Connor Schatz ripped a double to center field to put runners at second and third.

Hatlewick didn’t allow Schatz to score.

Hatlewick, recorded strikeouts of the Saints’ next two batters — Dominic Zander and Maddux Gerving. Hatlewick ended the afternoon with 6 Ks.

“He did a really nice job shutting guys down,” Ranum said of Hatlewick. “He did give up the lead but it wasn’t necessarily his fault — we had a couple of errors and all day he did a great job responding to that.”

Schatz, who allowed nine walks in his five innings pitched, was replaced by Bennett Grimm. Jamestown scored its final run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Thomas Newman.

Hatlewick had some misses in the top of the seventh, but after his conversation with Ranum, the senior settled down. Hatlewick caught Zander looking to earn out No. 2. A fly out to Braxton Perkins in center field ended game No. 1.

“I felt pretty good,” Hatlewick said with a shrug. “My curve was moving but I’ve got to stop walking and hitting people. If we don’t give up walks or hit people I think we are going to keep winning.”
