The Washington Mystics added a major piece to their future Monday night, selecting Notre Dame star guard Sonia Citron with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. And cheering her on every step of the way? Her boyfriend, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Marist Liufau.
Citron, a polished, two-way talent with elite basketball instincts, looks to become one of the faces of a new era in D.C.
Known for her ability to score at all three levels and intensity on defense, she averaged 14.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 steals in her final season with the Irish, earning First-Team All-ACC honors and ACC All-Defensive Team selection while drawing comparisons to some of the league’s top players.
Her all-around skill set, and leadership make her a natural fit for the Mystics, who are entering a new era following the retirement of Two-Time MVP and 2019 WNBA champion Elena Della Donne, as well as the hiring of Sydney Johnson as head coach and Jamila Widerman as general manager.
As she waited for her name to be called to the stage on draft night, Citron had a strong support system, including Liufau. After playing four seasons with the Fighting Irish, the second-year linebacker from Notre Dame was selected 87th overall by the Cowboys in the 2024 NFL Draft. While Citron waited for her moment in Brooklyn, Liufau stood by her side, providing support during this memorable moment for the couple.

While Citron looks to make an early impact on her new team, Liufau is poised to take on a more significant role in the heart of the Dallas defense in the 2025 season. His rookie year saw him play in all 17 games, starting nine, and contribute 50 tackles, 1.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles. The opportunity arises for the 24-year old as Dallas’ defense will likely begin 2025 without their standout linebacker, DeMarvion Overshown, who is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury from last December.
