Louisville football wrapped up the spring season with its spring game on April 11. But the team that took the field at L&N Stadium won’t be the same one that takes the field in the season opener against Eastern Kentucky on Aug. 30.
The transfer portal is set to reopen for the spring on April 16 and close on April 25. The nine-day window allows for the Cardinals to add players while also losing some in the process. Two are already reportedly planning to enter their names into the portal in offensive lineman Austin Collins and wide receiver Jojo Stone.
Tight ends and receivers are the most immediate needs for the Cardinals.
“In general, you’ve got to prepare for everything,” U of L coach Jeff Brohm said after the spring game. “You’d like to make sure that your roster stays intact, but you don’t know, so you’ve got to have options ready to go just in case things happen, which we do. But building depth at the positions I said are important: receiver and tight end. That’s probably the most critical position right now (where) there are young players, but we’ve got to get them ready to go fast. So, if another great one pops, without question, we would take it. But at the same time, we’re not going to reach just to reach.”
Here’s a look at Louisville’s outgoing players:
Jojo Stone, R-Fr., Wide receiver
Stone was a midyear enrollee and a three-star prospect from the 2024 recruiting class. Ranked as the No. 79 receiver nationally and No. 61 overall player in Georgia from the recruiting cycle, the receiver redshirted during the 2024 season. He only played in one game, against Austin Peay, but didn’t record a catch.
Austin Collins, R-Sr., Offensive lineman
Collins became the starting right guard in 2023 when Renato Brown suffered a season-ending injury against Pitt. He only gave up one sack in the seven games played as the Cardinals’ starter that season. Collins began the 2024 campaign as the starting right guard. He was a reserve for the final five games of the season. He didn’t allow a single sack in 542 snaps played and was the team’s best pass blocker. The Ohio native sat out of spring practices with an injury.
