Klaassen bites back after VAR debacle in Ajax’s win over Willem II

Referee Marc Nagtegaal and the VAR did not make a good impression on Davy Klaassen at the weekend, with the midfielder finding it truly incomprehensible that Ajax did not get a penalty against Willem II.

While Ajax only won the match against Willem II (2-1) deep into the second half, Klaassen never really doubted the outcome. “If you watch the whole match, I didn’t have the feeling that we wouldn’t win. I think it was a deserved victory,” he says on ESPN. “We came into their box a lot, but the real final pass was missing to get good chances.”

In the first half, Klaassen was certain he’d earned a penalty on two occasions. Each time came from a coming together with Amine Lachkar. “That boy kicks my leg and foot full on. For me, that is a very clear one”, says Klaassen about the first incident.

“The second? Yes, too, but what can I say? Then you really have to be with the men in black,” he refers to the referees. “I can’t believe it, we see it every week. What can I say, I really don’t know anymore…”
