DETROIT – Cody Bellinger is quitting wings.
The Yankees outfielder felt much better Wednesday morning after food poisoning forced the outfielder out of the Yankees’ lineup on Tuesday. A serving of flats and drumsticks, ordered via room service at the Yankees’ team hotel, were to blame.
“They were good coming in,” Bellinger said Wednesday with his name back in the lineup. “But I woke up at 4 a.m. sweating and just started throwing up for a few hours. It was a tough morning.”
Bellinger said he ordered traditional, bone-in wings for the men’s college basketball championship game on Monday. No sauces, spices or rubs.
“No flavor,” Bellinger insisted. He then said, “I don’t even want to think about wings.”
“I was down bad yesterday,” Bellinger continued. “I will not eat wings for five years. I swear. The thought of it makes me sick.”
On a similar note, Bellinger said that he saw a joke about him eating more wings after Tuesday’s game. An image featuring some wings and his Instagram handle appeared on social media with the caption “Round 2!!” However, Bellinger made it clear that the post was “straight up photoshopped.”
“I definitely would not eat wings again,” he stressed.
Bellinger added that he’s experienced food poisoning one other time. That incident didn’t involve wings, but it did occur during the Cubs’ trip to London in 2023.
“So I knew exactly what it was,” said Bellinger, who played for Chicago at the time. “It’s no fun.”
Fortunately for him and the Yankees, Bellinger’s bug appeared behind him on Wednesday. He even said he was available to pinch-hit on Tuesday, though he never did.
“I feel good today,” said Bellinger, carrying a large jug of water. “I slept a ton last night. My one time before was 24 hours, so I’m just hydrating and getting ready to play.”
