WASHINGTON — The Philadelphia 76ers made things official on Wednesday when they announced that All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey will miss the rest of the season. Maxey had not played since March 3 against the Portland Trail Blazers when he suffered a lower back sprain to add to his right finger sprain issue.

As time wore on, there was hope from coach Nick Nurse that Maxey would return. Even with the season going the way it is, Nurse was hoping that he would come back and play because there were still games left on the schedule. He wants his players out there if they are healthy enough to play.

Unfortunately, Maxey’s season is officially over after an MRI revealed that he re-injured the sprain. He played in just 52 games on the season as he will join Joel Embiid and Paul George on the sidelines for the final three games of the season.

“I’m disappointed for sure,” Nurse said on Wednesday. “Again, I thought we were gonna get that thing healed up and get him back and he kinda re-hurt it which I don’t like either at the practice. I keep saying I want these guys to get as healthy as they can as quickly as they can because there’s still work to do on getting better and working on their craft.”

Another reason why Nurse wanted Maxey to return is because he wanted him to experiment with more lineups and try different things out on the floor. Now, he won’t get that chance until opening night in the 2025-26 season.

“I was kinda hoping to use some of these games with letting him experiment with even more things,” Nurse added. “So I’m disappointed, but we’re here and there’s only a few games left anyway, but I’m disappointed.”

In terms of a timeline, there isn’t one just yet, the good thing is there isn’t a plan for surgery. It will come down to just him getting rest and preparing for the next season.

“Getting it better,” Nurse finished. “I don’t think it’s anything really major. They’re not talking about surgeries or any of that kind of stuff. He just needs some time away from getting hit and knocked around a bit. Then he gets back out there and starts working on some of the things we want him to do better.”
