After the Chargers’ loss to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round on Jan. 11, the 33-year-old Mack said he would take some time to decide his future. Apparently he decided he has more football left to play.
Mack has played in at least 16 games in each of his three seasons with the Chargers, and finished the 2024 season with six sacks, down from 17 in 2023. Still, he’ll be one of the most coveted defensive players on the free-agent market.
Would he return to the Chargers? Here’s what he said on Jan. 12:
“As long as Justin Herbert is your quarterback. You got [safety] Derwin James and all these guys that love the game of football. And Jim Harbaugh coaching? You know you always have a chance to win. Yeah, that’s a no-brainer.”
Mack has been named to nine Pro Bowls during his 11-year career, which also included stints with the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears. The Bears traded Mack to the Chargers prior to the 2022 season. In 2016, Mack’s third season in the NFL, he was named Defensive Player of the Year.
