Opening night got off to a thrilling start with Skylar Diggins-Smith playing hero for Lunar Owls BC
There’s a new league on the scene in the women’s basketball world. Unrivaled, which was cofounded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier to give players an alternative to going overseas in the offseason, tipped off its inaugural season in style on Friday night with a pair of games.
In the opener, Skylar Diggins-Smith showed the value of playing to a “winning score” when she hit a walk-off 3-pointer to complete Lunar Owls BC’s dramatic comeback win over Mist BC, 84-80. Diggins-Smith finished with 21 points, while Collier led the Lunar Owls with 27 points and 10 rebounds.
Later on, Rhyne Howard delivered Vinyl BC a 79-73 win over Rose BC with a stellar 33-point, six-rebound effort. Howard used a strong third quarter to push Vinyl’s lead to double digits, and they never looked back. Her big night was a clear indication that this will be a guard’s league.
Unrivaled’s regular season will run from Jan. 17 through March 10, with the highly-anticipated 1-on-1 tournament set to for Feb. 10, 13 and 14. The four-team, single-elimination playoffs will start with the semifinals on March 16 and the championship on March 18.
