CBS Sports’ latest mock draft does little to ease the nerves of Auburn fans awaiting the NBA draft decision of freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford.
Pettiford, who is expected to be the team’s nucleus next season, recently received a first-round projection from CBS Sports’ Adam Finklestein in his latest NBA mock draft, pairing him with the Los Angeles Clippers with the No. 30 overall pick.
Despite giving Pettiford a first-round grade, Finklestein feels that Pettiford’s career could benefit from one extra season at Auburn.
Pettiford is a very fringe first-round pick, and given the uncertainty that comes with that, coupled by the NIL market, he may be better off going back to college. He’s undersized but skilled, explosive, fearless, and capable of scoring in bunches.
Pettiford averaged 11.6 points, three assists, and 2.2 rebounds last season, playing mostly off the bench. His play off the bench in postseason play elevated his draft stock after posting 15.2 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game. Should he elect to stay at Auburn, Pettiford would take over the starting point guard role on a squad featuring several experienced transfers and talented freshmen ready to make a splash in the SEC.
Pettiford will have until June 15 to decide to go pro or return to Auburn.
