Last weekend, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid clarified the situation regarding the release of defensive end BJ Thompson. On Sunday, he addressed the media, providing a promising outlook for Thompson.

“He’s progressing, but he’s not quite there yet,” said Reid, “That doesn’t mean his career is over, far from it. We’re just in that situation right now.”

Thompson is still recovering from going into cardiac arrest during a meeting last June. He was quickly resuscitated and discharged from the hospital only a few days later, but continues to deal with the physical effects, delaying his return to the field.

The Chiefs needed the extra roster spots to sign 16 undrafted free agents before the rookie minicamp. There is a chance Thompson could return to the team, be placed back on injured reserve, and continue his rehab.

Thompson was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and played sparingly as a rookie, but was a member of the Super Bowl-winning team.
