The Washington Commanders made five selections in the 2025 NFL Draft, and have signed over a dozen contract extensions this offseason. The Commanders also made a major splash early in the offseason, trading a fifth-round pick for versatile wideout Deebo Samuel.
Still, despite all the wheeling and dealing that general manager Adam Peters has done, one team legend doesn’t expect him to be done anytime soon.
Three-time Super Bowl Champion and four-time Pro Bowler Charles Mann thinks more moves are on the horizon before the Commanders’ roster is finalized. The 11-year Commander believes fans shouldn’t overlook the options that are already available, considering what they accomplished in the 2024 season.
“Adam Peters is very savvy…Don’t think it’s over just because somebody wasn’t drafted…There will be veterans released, there could be trades, Peters isn’t done…And don’t overlook what’s already in the building.” Said Mann.
So, what could be next for the Commanders?
Landon Belote from The Wrightway Sports Network recently suggested that the Commanders should took a look at former Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond. Bond was once projected to be a second-round pick, but he is currently in the midst of a legal battle after turning himself in over an outstanding warrant for sexual assault. He posted a $25,000 bond and has since filed a lawsuit against his accuser, alleging defamation and maintaining his innocence.
It seems unlikely that Washington would want to touch that situation until it is resolved, but Belote argues the football reasons for adding Bond far outweighs the risk.
“If he can add more muscle to his frame as well as learn from a star receiver of Terry McLaurin’s caliber, then there is no telling just how vital of a long-term role he could play for Washington as they aspire to remain in championship contention for the foreseeable future. This would also allow [Isaiah] Bond to grow from a personal standpoint as an adult to avoid situations like the one he is currently involved in. This is what is commonly referred to as a low-risk, high-reward move that would bolster a receiver room that has attempted to add depth this offseason. Adding Bond would only add another potential contributor to the room.” Wrote Belote.
One area of need for the Commanders could be edge rusher, and ESPN’s John Keim made a case for the Commanders to sign a veteran such as Za’Darius Smith or Von Miller.
“None of Washington’s current edge rushers recorded more than 5.5 sacks last season after the Commanders let Dante Fowler Jr., and his 10.5 sacks, exit in free agency,” Keim wrote. “But they didn’t draft an edge rusher. Washington likes its depth at the position and beefed up its front to handle the run — a bigger issue than the pass rush in 2024.”
“They could still seek more help, with veterans such as Za’Darius Smith and Von Miller, among others, still available.”
